CLOSE READING: SYMBOLISM

WHAT DOES THE PROTAGONIST OF A TEXT
DEMONSTRATE?

About “setting”? (social classes, time, place, history & heritage, values)
About her role? (in society or in the text)
About what she stands for? (justice, freedom, sexuality, beauty)
About other people like her? (stereotypes)

HOW? What specific symbols?

In Finding Forrester, read the following passages and think about anything symbolism:

“Somehow Crawford’s praise, if that’s what it was, left a sour note. It was as thought he didn’t believe Jamal was capable of good work. There was just a grudging acknowledgment that what he was doing now was an improvement over his work at Franklin. Disappointed, Jamal walked to the subway, bent over from the weight of his backpack and his thoughts.” –p. 88

“I left my backpack up there.”  … Jamal slouched off toward home, head hung low, hands jammed deep in his pockets. He felt strangely light and insubstantial without his backpack- light and wrong. P. 27-29

I may be black, he thought, but he guy trusts me a little now because I’m smart and he knows I’m smart. What a screwed up world. Just then, Jamal heard a thump on the sidewalk. He wheeled around, holding the ball in front of him like a shield to fend off attackers. His backpack lay on the sidewalk. Jamal glanced up, but he saw nothing inside the open window. Still, he sensed the man’s presence somewhere behind the windows staring down at him.” –p.39
